Hector Cuevas likes to tell about the first time he saw Cuban star Ibrahim Ferrer and the Buena Vista Social Club perform. "The Concert was good," says the 52 year old Cuevas, "and I knew I could do as well. That very night I decided to assemble my own band. I had been playing that kind of music a long time, and I thought I could put together a band as good that would bring salsa, merengue, and traditional boleros back to the music scene for the public."
Immediately after the Buena Vista concert he began recruiting members of his band in discotheques, even in subways. The band members come from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Japan, the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
The title track on, Cubarengue, their new CD, was written by band leader Cuevas. Three more original compositions were contributed by multi-instumentalist Jesus Alejandro "El Nino" Perez. one of his songs, 'Boston Latin Band' opens with the boast: "Boston salseros are complaining/They say no band plays salsa/I'm here to end the dilemma/With Boston Latin Band the problem is over."
